In my opinion, traditional "party store" piñatas are boring. So, why not make my own? The fact that I've never made one had never stopped me before. After reading a couple sites for inspiration (http://pinataboy.com/makeazebra.html and http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Piñata) I was off to the craft supply store.
First step - Papier- mâché. I used 2 "punch balloons" to form the strips of papier mache on. I searched for some kind of guideline as to how thick of a layer was needed. Couldn't come up with a great answer. I'd say you just have to make it thick enough to contain about 4 pounds of candy and to withstand a few good up-to-bats. Keep in mind the average age of the batters. You want it to be challenging, but not impossible.
Second step: Construction. Pop balloon and pull them out. Cut openings in the balls then tape them together so they form one large candy holding compartment. Use card board, tape and newspaper to make your form. Cover everything using spray adhesive and a couple layers of tissue paper.
Third step (my favorite) Decorate! Use whatever you want. Try not to make the areas around where the candy will be too thick. I used gold tissue paper and crepe paper streamers. Just have fun!!!!
Last step - Let the beatings begin!
